On or about Friday, March 19th, 2021, around 5:35 in the afternoon, an accident between a tractor-trailer and a car left a 19-year-old woman dead. Troopers from the SDHP said the accident was reported along Highway 81 near Yankton, South Dakota.
Police said 19-year-old Abigail Gilkerson was killed when her car allegedly crossed over the center line of the roadway and struck a tractor-trailer driven by 64-year-old Willis Van Roekel. Gilkerson died of her injuries after the accident. Roekel was treated for unspecified minor injuries.
According to Google Maps, the scene of the accident is about 11 miles north of Yankton, which is about 79 miles southwest of Sioux Falls.
State and local law enforcement are assisting in the accident investigation.
