On or about Monday, January 4th, 2021, around 12:55 in the afternoon, a head-on collision between a car and an 18-wheeler claimed the life of a 29-year-old Valparaiso woman. Troopers from the ISP said the accident happened along State Highway 149 in Portage Township, Indiana.

Deputies from the Porter County Sheriff’s Office said 29-year-old Blythe Leer was killed when her car was allegedly hit by an 18-wheeler that crossed from the southbound to the northbound lanes. Authorities said the southbound truck may have swerved to avoid a collision with a stopped car when it crossed the center line.

Emergency responders pronounced Leer dead of her injuries at the scene of the accident. Officials did not mention any other injuries in their preliminary statement.

According to Google Maps, Portage Township is about 39 miles southeast of downtown Chicago, Illinois.

State Police is assisting with the accident investigation.
