On or about Tuesday, January 11th, 2022, around 5:30 in the morning, an accident between a pedestrian and a tractor-trailer claimed the life of a 70-year-old North Carolina man. Officials from the SCHP said the accident was reported on Interstate 77 just outside Ridgeway in Fairfield County, South Carolina.
Representatives from the North Carolina Highway Patrol said 70-year-old Chavis Burton was killed when he was allegedly struck by a tractor-trailer as he was walking near or made an attempt to cross the lanes of traffic on an I-77 ramp. Emergency responders pronounced Burton dead of his injuries a short time after the accident. Police did not mention any other vehicles in their report on the accident.
According to Google Maps, Interstate 77 cuts north and south through Fairfield County, with the scene of the accident situated about 26 miles north of downtown Columbia.
Police are still investigating the accident.
