On or about Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021, an accident between a tractor-trailer and a pedestrian left a 78-year-old Minnesota man dead. Troopers from the State Patrol said the accident was reported on the northbound side of Interstate 29 in Sisseton, South Dakota.

Officers from the area said 78-year-old Gerald Bartell was killed when a tractor-trailer allegedly struck him as he was changing a tire on the shoulder of the northbound lanes. Emergency responders pronounced Bartell dead a short time after they arrived at the scene. Police identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as Wilhelm Hiebert, who was uninjured in the accident.

Interstate 29 runs north and south just east of Sisseton, which is about 92 miles south of Fargo.

State and local law enforcement are investigating the accident.
