On or about Sunday, December 19th, 2021, around 1:22 in the morning, a hit-and-run accident with a wrong-way driver claimed the life of a young boy and sent another to the hospital. Deputies from the Wise County Sheriff’s Office said the accident was reported along Highway 287 in Rhome, Texas.
Investigators said 5-year-old Gideon Osmeke was killed while 14-year-old Maverick Bible Avant was injured when the vehicle they were in was allegedly struck head-on by a car that was traveling the wrong direction on Highway 287. Emergency responders pronounced Osmeke dead a short time after the collision, while 14-year-old Maverick Bible Avant was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities said the driver of the wrong-way vehicle allegedly fled the scene of the accident on foot. Police have since arrested and charged 18-year-old Christopher Fowler in connection with the accident.
Police are still trying to determine if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
