On or about Saturday, July 9th, 2022, around 8:15 at night, an accident between an alelged drunk driver and an off-duty deputy on a riding lawnmower left a 71-year-old man dead. Troopers from the Department of Public Safety said the accident was reported along Burrell-Wingate Road in Jefferson County, Texas.

Spokespeople from the Texas DPS said 71-year-old James Lee was killed when he was allegedly hit by a vehicle while operating a riding lawnmower along Burrell-Wingate Road. Emergency responders pronounced Lee dead of his injuries a short time after the accident. Police did not mention any other injuries stemming from the accident.

Authorities have since identified the driver of the car as Michael David Miller, who currently faces charges of intoxication manslaughter in connection with the crash.

According to Google Maps, the scene of the accident is not far from Beaumont.

Police are still investigating.
