On or about Tuesday, January 19th, 2021, around 9:30 at night, a hit-and-run accident between a pedestrian and a tractor-trailer left a 24-year-old woman and her baby dead. Troopers from the NMSP said the accident happened on the eastbound side of Interstate 40 just outside Gallup in McKinley County, New Mexico.

New Mexico State Police said 24-year-old Jessica Ann Copey and her child were killed when they were allegedly struck by a tractor-trailer that subsequently fled the scene. Copey and her child were pronounced dead of their injuries at the scene.

Investigators tracked down the alleged truck driver, identified as Jageet Singh, who has since been charged with two counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in great bodily injury or death, one count of possession of a controlled substance: heroin, one count of possession of a controlled substance: methamphetamine and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene of the accident to assist in the investigation.
