On or about Wednesday, December 22nd, 2021, around 7:15 in the morning, an accident between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer claimed the life of a 48-year-old Dumas man and sent two other individuals to the hospital. Authorities from the Department of Public Safety said the accident was reported along U.S. Highway 287 just outside Cactus in Moore County, Texas.

Troopers from the Texas DPS said 48-year-old Jose Mendoza was killed, while 63-year-old Sebastian Sierra and 28-year-old Pablo Gutierrez were injured when the pickup truck they were in allegedly collided with a tractor-trailer that was making a turn off Highway 287. Emergency responders pronounced Mendoza dead of his injuries a short time after they responded to the scene of the collision. Paramedics transported Sierra and Gutierrez to a hospital in Amarillo with unspecified injuries. Officials identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as 34-year-old Carlos Garcia, who was unhurt in the accident.

According to Google Maps, the scene of the accident is situated about 4 miles south of Cactus, which is about 60 miles north of downtown Amarillo.

Texas DPS assisted local authorities at the scene of the crash.
