On or about Saturday, January 1st, 2022, around 12:06 in the morning, a hit-and-run accident between a pedestrian and a passenger vehicle claimed the life of a 17-year-old boy. Troopers from the Department of Public Safety said the accident was reported on Cesar Chavez Road at or near the intersection with Owassa Road in San Juan, Texas.
Law enforcement spokespeople said 17-year-old Juan Vasquez Jr. was killed when he was allegedly hit by a passing Toyota Sienna minivan as he was walking alongside or made an attempt to cross the lanes of Cesar Chavez Road. After the initial accident, the driver of the Toyota Sienna minivan fled the scene on foot. Emergency responders pronounced Vasquez Jr. dead of his injuries a short time after they responded to the scene of the accident.
According to Google Maps, San Juan is about 4 miles east of McAllen, not far from the border with Mexico.
Officials are still trying to track down the driver of the minivan.
