On or about Saturday, January 8th, 2022, around 7:00 in the morning, a major accident between a passenger vehicle and a garbage truck claimed the life of an off-duty police officer. Authorities from the area said the accident was reported along Tonnele Avenue near the intersection with 41st Street in North Bergen, New Jersey.
Law enforcement spokespeople said Officer Julio Luis Noriega was killed when the Honda passenger vehicle he was driving and a garbage truck collided under unspecified circumstances while driving down Tonnelle Avenue. Paramedics pronounced Noriega dead of his injuries a short time after the accident. Emergency responders transported the driver of the garbage truck to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.
