On or about Tuesday, December 7th, 2021, around 4:45 in the morning, an accident between a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle claimed the life of a 23-year-old Hughes Springs resident. Representatives from the Department of Public Safety said the accident was reported along Highway 271 in Camp County, Texas.
Authorities from the Texas DPS said 23-year-old Luis Arellano Velazquez was killed when the vehicle he was driving allegedly slammed into the back of a tractor-trailer as they were both northbound on Highway 271. Emergency responders rushed Velazquez to UT Health East Texas Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time after his arrival. Officials identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as Edward Salazar, who was unhurt in the collision.
According to Google Maps, Highway 271 runs north and south into Camp County, which is situated about 123 miles east of downtown Dallas.
Multiple agencies assisted at the scene of the accident.
