On or about Monday, July 12th, 2021, around 11:30 in the morning, an accident between a car and a tractor-trailer claimed the life of an 18-year-old from Lumberton. Troopers from the NCHP said the accident was reported at the intersection of Cherry Grove Road and Rough and Ready Road just outside Cerro Gordo in Columbus County, North Carolina.

Investigators said 18-year-old Matthew Sessoms was killed when his car was allegedly struck by a dump truck that failed to yield at the intersection of Rough and Ready Road and Cherry Grove Road. Emergency responders pronounced Sessoms dead of his injuries at the scene of the accident. Authorities identified the driver of the dump truck as J.C. Soles Jr, who was unhurt in the accident.

Police have since charged Soles with failure to yield and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in connection with the collision.
