On or about Saturday, August 7th, 2021, around 5:00 in the morning, an accident between a pickup truck and a tractor-trailer left one individual dead and sent two others to the hospital. Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office said the accident was reported along the southbound side of Interstate 75 in Athens, Tennessee.

Troopers from the TSP said 64-year-old Mitchell Allmon was killed when the tractor-trailer he was driving allegedly crashed off the side of the road when a pickup truck allegedly swerved to avoid a tree in the road and hit the 18-wheeler. Allmon died a short time after the accident, while two people in the pickup truck were taken to the hospital with unspecified injuries after the incident.

According to Google Maps, Interstate 75 runs north and south along the eastern edge of Athens, which is situated about 58 miles northeast of Chattanooga.

Police are still investigating the accident.
