On or about Wednesday, June 29th, 2022, around 2:12 in the morning, an accident between an alleged drunk driver and an off-duty police officer left a 35-year-old man dead. Deputies from the Travis County Sheriff’s Office said the accident was reported along the access road to the MoPac Expressway in Austin, Texas.
Authorities from the Texas Department of Public Safety said 35-year-old Poteet police officer Jeffrey Richardson was killed when he was hit by a vehicle as he was directing traffic along the MoPac Expressway service road. Emergency responders rushed Richardson to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries a short time after his arrival.
Police have since identified the driver of the vehicle as 26-year-old Lindsay Smith, who has been charged with intoxication manslaughter in connection with the accident.
According to Google Maps, the scene of the incident is on the north side of Austin.
Officials are still investigating the accident.
