On or about Wednesday, December 9th, 2020, around 7:30 in the morning, an accident between an 18-wheeler and a car left a 69-year-old man dead. Troopers from the DPS said the accident happened at the intersection of Highway 71 and Pope Bend Road in Bastrop County, Texas.

Texas Department of Public Safety officials said 69-year-old Refugio De Leon Samarron was killed when his car was allegedly struck by a tractor-trailer that disregarded a stop light. Samarron was on Pope Bend Road and the tractor-trailer was traveling on Highway 71. Emergency responders rushed Samarron to a nearby hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Officials have since charged the driver of the truck with criminally negligent homicide.

State Police assisted Deputies from the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office with the accident investigation.
