On or about Wednesday, December 15th, 2021, around 7:00 in the morning, a serious accident between a pedestrian and a dump truck claimed the life of a 50-year-old woman. Local law enforcement spokespeople said the accident was reported along Highway 71 just outside Maxton in Scotland County, North Carolina.

Deputies from the Scotland County Sheriff’s Office said 50-year-old Shelly Romero was killed when she was allegedly struck by a Waste Management dump truck as she was walking alongside or made an attempt to cross the lanes of Highway 71. Emergency responders pronounced Romero dead of her injuries a short time after they arrived at the scene of the accident. The driver of the dump truck was uninjured.

According to Google Maps, the scene of the accident is less than a mile north of the Maxton town line.

Officials are still investigating the accident.
