On or about Wednesday, October 21st, 2020, an accident between a car and a flatbed truck left a 72-year-old woman from Bowie dead. Texas DPS said the accident happened on Highway 81/287 at the intersection with Co Rd 1697 in Wise County, Texas.
Authorities said that 72-year-old Bowie resident Shirley Bowman Labus was killed when the car she was driving on County Road 1697 allegedly failed to yield at the intersection when it was hit by a Chevrolet 2500 flatbed truck driven by 20-year-old Giovanni Martinez. Martinez was southbound on Hwy 81/287 Paramedics pronounced Labus dead at the scene of the accident. Martinez was uninjured.
A look on Google Streetview shows that Highway 81/287 is four lanes, with a wide grassy median dividing north and southbound traffic. County Road 1697 is two lanes that run east and west, with a stop sign at the intersection of the highway.
Troopers from the Texas DPS are assisting with the accident investigation.
