On or about Tuesday, August 17th, 2021, around 10:20 at night, an accident between a tractor-trailer and a disabled SUV claimed the lives of two people. Troopers from the Department of Public Safety said the accident was reported along Highway 77 just outside Sarita in Kenedy County, Texas.

Officials said 48-year-old Fernando Benavidez Jr and a truck driver were killed when a tractor-trailer allegedly struck their disabled SUV on the shoulder of Highway 77. Benavidez and the tractor-trailer driver were pronounced dead a short time after the collision. Paramedics transported a passenger in the SUV to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries stemming from the accident.

According to Google Maps, the scene of the accident is about 17 miles north of Sarita, which is about 61 miles south of Corpus Christi.

Police are still investigating.
