On or about Friday, December 18th, 2020, around 11:30 in the morning, an accident between a tour bus and a pedestrian claimed the life of a 78-year-old man. Law enforcement spokespeople said the accident happened at the intersection of the George Washington Highway and Victory Boulevard in Portsmouth, Virginia.
Investigators said 78-year-old Jerry Tibbitt was killed when he was allegedly struck by a tour bus while pulling a wagon across the crosswalk. Tibbit was pronounced dead of his injuries a short time after he was struck. No other injuries were mentioned by police.
Photos from the scene show the tour bus stopped in the inside lane of Victory Boulevard.
According to Google Maps, George Washington Highway runs north and south with six lanes, while Victory Boulevard runs east and west with two lanes. The intersection is controlled by a stoplight.
Police are still investigating the incident.
