On or about Friday, December 11th, 2020, around 7:00 in the morning, an accident between a tractor-trailer and an SUV sent a 59-year-old woman to the hospital. State Police said the accident happened at the intersection of South Fourth Street and Highway 59 in Atchison, Kansas.
Authorities said 59-year-old Mary Jane Sowers was injured when her Ford Explorer was struck by a tractor-trailer that allegedly ran a red light. Sowers was northbound on Fourth Street when the westbound 18-wheeler struck the vehicle broadside. Paramedics transported Sowers to Amberwell Hospital with unspecified injuries.
Police identified the driver of the tractor-trailer as 64-year-old Rickey Lee Derr, who did not report injuries after the crash.
According to Google Maps, Atchison is located about 46 miles northwest of the greater Kansas City area.
State and local law enforcement are assisting in the accident investigation.
