On or about Wednesday, December 16th, 2020, around 2:00 in the afternoon, an accident between a tractor-trailer and a pedestrian sent a VDOT worker to the hospital. Investigators said the accident happened in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 in Afton, Virginia.
Troopers from the Virginia State Police said Matt Fitzgerald was seriously hurt when he was allegedly hit by a tractor-trailer that lost control and skidded onto the shoulder where Fitzgerald was assisting a disabled vehicle. Paramedics rushed Fitzgerald to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries. The tractor-trailer allegedly left the scene after the accident.
Law enforcement spokespeople later charged Jerzy Waclaw Czubak with felony hit and run and reckless driving in connection with the accident.
State and local law enforcement representatives are investigating.
