Details:
On or about Friday, July 23rd, 2021, around 11:10 in the morning, an accident between a tractor-trailer and a pedestrian claimed the life of a 58-year-old man. Deputies from the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office said the accident was reported along the southbound side of Interstate 55 in Southaven, Mississippi.
Investigators said 58-year-old Vincent Stokes Layton was killed when he was allegedly struck by a tractor-trailer as he was walking down or making an attempt to cross southbound Interstate 55 beneath the Goodman Road overpass. Paramedics pronounced Layton dead of his injuries a short time after the accident, but it is not immediately clear if he died at the scene or after being rushed to a nearby hospital. No other injuries were mentioned in the preliminary police report.
According to Google Maps, Interstate 55 cuts north and south through the center of Southaven, which is about 13 miles south of downtown Memphis, Tennessee.
Police hope to release the findings of their investigation at a later date.
